Origin: The Californian rabbit originate from the U.S. It was developed in California in the 1920s by George West. He crossed Himalayan, the Standard Chinchilla and the New Zealand Whites rabbit. The purpose of this crossing was to get a good meat breed that also had good fur. It was first shown at South Gate, California in 1928. In 1939 it was given a working standard in the U.S. In the end of the 1940s the breed was imported to U.K. and under the 1960s it came to the rest of Europe. It was recognized in the Nordic standard 1966. In Sweden the Californian have had a very sporadic occurrence. In the end of the 1970s around 100 Californian was shown each year.
Nowadays it's a rare breed in Sweden. I'm actually the only breeder who raise them in Sweden.
The American point scale for Californian look like this:
General type 65
Fur 20
Color and markings 5
Condition 5
Total points 100
The British scale look like this:
Type 55
Fur 15
Markings and colour 15
Total points 100
The Nordic scale look like this:
Weight 5
Type and presentation 10
Body shape 20
Fur density 10
Fur quality 10
Head markings 20
Body markings 20
Condition 5

I personally consider that 40 points for the markings is way too much. 20 for the markings and 40 for the body shape would be much better.
In the Nordic standard Californian are recognized in three colours: black, blue and brown.
It should have a weight over 4,01 kg.
